All about being Baligh 

According to the teachings of Islam, human life is divided into two parts, the first is before adolescence or childhood, and the second is after adolescence or adulthood. 

The Islamic laws are fully applied only to a Baligh (mentally matured) man and woman and they will be judged in the day of judgement accordingly. If a person dies before becoming baligh, he/she is considered as an innocent and their place shall be in heaven.

Who is known as Baligh?

In Islamic legal terminology, bāligh means a person who reached to the maturity. A mentally matured person is considered as “Mukallaf” responsible and accountable person as well.

When the girls become baligh?

The girls become Baligh when they complete nine Lunar years of their age. (About eight years and eight months and twenty days of the solar calendar).

When the boys become baligh?

The boys become Baligh, if any one of the following three signs is appeared in them:

  1. The growth of rough hair, below the abdomen, above the private part.
  2. Having wet dream (discharge of the semen).
  3. Completion of fifteen lunar calendar years of age (equal to about 14 years and seven months and fifteen days of the solar calendar).

What should you do when you become baligh?

  • You must thank your Lord for making you capable to be addressed by Him in His holy book “Quran” as wherever, He says O’ believers! You are one of them.
  • You must start learning the religious duties and practical laws such as daily prayers and fasting during the month of Ramadhan etc.
  • You must start practicing your religious duties right after becoming Baligh.

  • You must make sure that you believe in the fundamentals of religion (uṣūl al‑dīn) based on personal insight and logical reasons, as you cannot follow anyone in the fundamentals of religion blindly. However, in matters concerning the Islamic practical laws – you must either be a jurist (Mujtahid) who is capable of ascertaining laws based on proof, or you must follow the most learned jurist.
